A limpia is a Mexican Spiritual Cleansing ritual. It cleanses body, emotions, mind and soul from negative energies or thoughts. Traditionally it is used to get rid of blockages. Some people believe that it removes witchcraft, curses and hexes. After a limpia we may feel light, peaceful and happy. It is used also to attract happiness, love, health, abundance, work, etc.
It also has spiritual benefits like improving our communication with the spirit world. A limpia can also be performed as a preparation ritual for a ceremony or a “trabajo” (spiritual work).
There are many types of limpias and there are many different spiritual tools to perform the limpia. Which one is better? That is up to you. Try different ones and see which one works for you. Just to mention a few, you can have a limpia done with plants, crystals, spirit waters, spiritual baths, smudging, incense, candles, eggs, etc.
Also it is believed that the best days to perform a limpia are Tuesdays and Fridays and the best time is at midday when the sun is in its highest position.
Some of the plants used for limpias are: ruda (rue), pirul (pepper tree), romero (rosemary), albahaca or alucema (basil), Tabaco (tobacco), etc.
A limpia is one of the few rituals that can be done by long distance if the Curandero is very experienced. My only recommendation is when looking for a limpia, be very careful; if it doesn’t feel good, follow your instincts and look for another Curandera or Practitioner to perform the limpia.

The Curanderismo tradition of Mexico is the ancient way of bringing the body, mind, emotions, and soul back into a state of balance. Customarily, an elder Curandera(o) teaches the tradition in oral form. Curandera Ixtoii Paloma Cervantes is an elder and instructor or “Maestra” who was born and raised in Mexico in the Curanderismo tradition. She works full-time as a Curandera since 1986.
In 1998, she moved to California where she kept her practice and started to teach Mexican Shamanism or Curanderismo and other spiritual modalities. Now, not only does she teach in California, but also in other states and countries.
